Giant Paper Flowers

Over-the-top, large paper flowers are really popular right now, and I was really excited to make a set of my own! I was planning this DIY Mimosa Bar for Cricut & Martha Stewart, and I knew they’d be the perfect addition to my wall backdrop. After reading some different posts (I especially love this Giant Paper Flowers Tutorial from my friend Cori over at Hey Let’s Make Stuff), I decided on making giant paper peonies designed by Lia Griffith.

What you need to make Giant Paper Flowers for a Party Backdrop?

Making paper flowers really only takes a few supplies – but you’re going to need a lot of card stock paper, depending on the size and number of flowers you need to make. I made 3 large flowers out of medium weight card stock paper, so the supply list will include the items required to make 3 flowers.

  • Cricut Machine (Buy on Cricut | Amazon)
  • Green Cricut Cutting Mat (this is dependent on the weight of paper you’re using. I prefer using my green mat for Cricut card stock.)
  • Cricut Scoring Pen or Scoring Wheel
  • Cardstock – I used Cricut brand, but there are many options of different weight and colors. I chose shades of pink and orange to coordinate with my Mimosa Bar Decorations.
    – 16 sheets of 12×12″ paper for the large paper flower
    – 8 sheets of 12×12″ paper for the medium sized paper flower
    – 5 sheets of 12×12″ paper for the small sized paper flower
    – 2 sheets of yellow 12×12″ paper for the center parts of the flowers
    – 6 sheets of green 12×12″ paper for the leaves
  • Hot Glue Gun for assembly
  • Pencil or dowel rod for shaping the petals
  • Glue Dashes for adhering the flowers to the wall

How to Make a Giant Paper Flower Backdrop

Download the gorgeous free large paper peony designs from Lia Griffith. Upload the file to Cricut Design Space and size all of the pieces to the desired size for your flowers. The file may take some time to load into Design Space, because there are a lot of pieces to the design.

For the flowers pictured, the largest petal sizes for each flower were: 8.5 inches for the largest flower, 7.25 inches for the medium flower, and 5.75 inches for the small flower.

Prepare to cut all of your petals. Just like in real life, these peonies have a lot of petals, so plan on hanging out by your Cricut for a while. I used 3 Cricut mats at one time, so I could prep the mats before they were ready to cut to save a little time. Then, while I was removing one set of petals, another would already be cutting.

Cut all of the flower pieces, keeping them organized by color and size. This will help you during assembly. Roll and shape petals using a pencil or dowel rod. You want the petals to curl to look more realistic.

Start with the center piece (stamen) of each flower. Fold in half on the score line, then roll tightly and glue.

Starting with the smallest petals of each flower, glue into an evenly space circle with the stamen in the middle. Caution – paper will get hot! Continue adding petals from smallest to largest, filling in the gaps created by the previous layer of petals. Once all of the the petals have been glued, set aside to completely cool and dry. Repeat with the other two flowers.

After flowers are dry, you can shape the petals using the pencil as needed.

Attach to the wall using several of the UGlu Dashes per flower. Dashes are similar to Glue Dots, but are for heavy duty use (which means sometimes they are hard to get off of surfaces!). They were introduced to me a few years ago, and I love them. I use them for all of my parties. But despite how strong they are, I would recommend hanging the flowers as close to the party time as possible. In addition, you can also reinforce the Dashes with tape, fishing line, or another type of adhesive.

These giant paper flowers worked perfectly for my party backdrop – they add a ton of style and visual interest to ANY party, including birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, and even weddings! They are also perfect for wall decor in nurseries and bedrooms – I use these flowers for wall decor in my office now!
