Sometimes it’s easy for holidays to sneak upon us, and the 4th of July this year is no exception. If you’re having a cookout or party this weekend to celebrate with your friends and family, it can be overwhelming to plan everything (and make it look good!). Today, we are sharing some simple ideas from our past 4th of July celebrations to help you make your party look great without a ton of effort!

For a contribution to a magazine years ago, we made a simple but delicious Cherry Pie (and no one says you can’t just buy one!) and used our vintage blue and white china to serve and display our desserts. Blue and white vintage dishes and serve ware are SO easy to find at thrift stores, so over the next couple of days you could easily find some pieces for next to nothing. Add a red tablecloth or napkins (or a pie) and some of your basic white serve ware, and you have an instant red, white and blue party that is classic and beautiful!

If you aren’t the type to make an elaborately decorated cake, the “naked” cake trend is just for you. It goes well with rustic decor, and if you top it with some fruit, it’s still just as gorgeous as cakes that will take hours to create. We created this red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and topped it with blackberries and blueberries (again, instant red, white and blue!).

Layered jello is a dessert that will make your grandma proud, and the kids will love it! We layered it in vintage sundae cups, and they turned out gorgeous!

Make your own or buy ice cream sandwiches, and roll the edges in 4th of July-themed sprinkles. Pull them out at the end of the party and everyone will think you went to some serious trouble to make a themed dessert. This technique can also be applied to plain iced cupcakes, a white cake, oreos, and other desserts.
